Warnings

Operating a computer while driving is extremely dangerous. If using Roadnav in a car, always have a passenger operate Roadnav. Drivers should always keep their eyes on the road.

The data provided by the US Census Bureau is largely accurate, but it is known to contain bugs. Use at your own risk.

Stable Releases

The current stable version of Roadnav is 0.19.

Precompiled Packages (Stable)

Various precompiled/prepackaged versions of Roadnav are available:

  • Windows 2000/XP/Vista setup package. Running it will bring up an installation wizard that will guide you through the installation process.
  • Fedora 7 i386 RPM package.
  • Fedora 7 x86_64 RPM package.
  • Fedora Core 6 i386 RPM package.
  • Fedora Core 6 x86_64 RPM package.
  • PCLinuxOS RPM package.
  • Debian i386 .deb package. This package was compiled for Debian etch. It should also work with Ubuntu 7.04 since Ubuntu is based on Debian.
  • Debian amd64 .deb package. This package was compiled on Debian etch.
  • Ubuntu i386 .deb package. This package was compiled for Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon).
  • Ubuntu amd64 .deb package. This package was compiled for Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon).
  • Mac OS X .dmg disk image. Intel Mac users: Universal binary support is still experimental. Please run Roadnav under Rosetta to download maps, otherwise an error message will appear.

Compiling From Source (Stable)

If you do not see your platform listed, the Roadnav source code can be downloaded from Sourceforge. LibRoadnav source code can be downloaded from here. Installation is simply a matter of unpacking the LibRoadnav archive somewhere (e.g. /usr/local/src), and doing a "./configure ; make", then "make install" as the superuser, and repeating this process for Roadnav.

Windows Notes

If you do not have a Speech icon in control panel, you may also want to download and install the Microsoft SAPI 5.1 SDK so you can get verbal turn by turn directions.

Linux/OS X Notes

Roadnav can also use the Festival Speech Synthesis System if it is installed. Consult your distribution for precompiled Festival packages.

If you are using a Roadnav package precompiled for a Linux distribution that does not exactly match the distribution you are running, and you are experiencing unusual crashes, especially crashes whenever you click on the map, it is recommended that you recompile Roadnav from its source. Newer distributions (e.g. Fedora 8) are not compatible with the precompiled packages here, but should work fine if you compile Roadnav from source.

Experimental Releases

Experimental releases can be downloaded from below. They have not been tested as much as the stable releases and probably contain bugs. If you encounter any bugs in the experimental releases, please report them on the Sourceforge tracker system so they can get resolved before they end up in a stable version. The change log has a complete list of changes in the experimental release.
